Safety of the use of maduramycin (Cygro) was studied in 600 Tetra-82 broiler chickens. Maduramycin was fed in doses of 2.5, 5.0, 7.5 as well as 10.0 mg/kg of feed during the starting and growing phases (between the 1st and 42nd days) and the experiment was evaluated following a 7-day prohibition term of consumption. It was found that maduramycin, applied in the proposed dose (5.0 mg/kg of feed) did not influence significantly the tendencies of investigated parameters (body mass-gain, feed consumption, feed conversion, deaths). When the compound was applied in a dose of 7.5 mg/kg of feed, body mass-gain and feed consumption of animals decreased by 4.5 and 2.7 per cent, respectively during the period of experimental feeding and and by 2.5 per cent and 1.5 per cent, respectively during the entire experiment. In case of twofold overdosage (10.0 mg/kg of feed), body mass-gain decreased by 16.6 per cent and the feed consumption by 9.7 per cent during the period of experimental feeding. Considering the whole experiment, these values were 9.9 and 6.9 per cent, respectively. Number of deaths was influenced neither by the high nor by lower doses of the compound. According to these results, maduramycin was found a safe substance in the proposed concentration of 5.0 mg/kg of feed. The prevention of overdosage - as in case of other ionophorous antococcidia - requires accuracy in the production of premixes and mixed feeds and more attention should be paid to the control of effective agents in the feeds.
