The photosynthesis, nitrogen metabolism and growth of mustard plants (Brassica juncea L.) were studied under long-term defficiency of phosphorus and nitrogen in the nutrient solutions. The P- and N- starvations severe for this plant genotype caused an alteration of sink-source relations, promotion of root growth as compared to leaves, the biomass production and growth of whole plants were low. Nitrogen metabolism and photosynthesis also were disturbed. Under N-deficiency nitrate content sharply declined, activity of nitrate reductase and the content of all free amino acids and protein decreased. Among the proteins the amount of protein fraction 1 was especially low that resulted in lower photosynthetic rate and starch accumulation in leaves. Under P-deficiency nitrate reductase activity was low, the protein synthesis diminished but some amino acids, proline and arginine in particular, accumulated sharply, while alanine, glycine, glutamic acid and amides increased slower. The photosynthetic rate maintained at the same level at first but declined by half to the 15th day of starvation, starch being the main product. P- and N-deficiencies have disturbed the whole complex of photosynthetic reactions. Decoordination of carbon and nitrogen assimilations is a typical feature of stressed plants.
