Gas hydrocarbons (ethylene and ethane) produced by kernels and abscisic acid influence the process of barley kernel germination and have effect on malting quality. Production of hydrocarbons was highest during the milk maturity in all three tested varieties and decreased gradually. Higher content of abscisic acid increases the production of both hydrocarbons, but no positive regression dependence was confirmed. The variety Alexis had the highest level of abscisic acid, the highest production of ethylene and ethane and the lowest growth activity of excised embryos.
