Studies on damages caused by sedges in paddy field of Mazandaran.

In Mazandaran repeated applications of rice graminicides, which are most effective on Echinochloa spp., have caused changes in rice weed flora. Although the density of Echinochloa has diminished, other weeds, particularly species of Cyperus and Scirpus, including Scirpus mucronatus, S. maritimus, Cyperus difformis and Scirpus juncoides have become dominant in some paddy fields. In addition, the density of broad leaf weeds including Alisma plantago aquatica, Sagittaria sagittifolia and Monocoria vaginalis has increased to a level that control has become essential. The density and damage of the sedges and board leaf weeds were studied. These studies indicated that the sedges are seriologically harmful and cause appreciable yield losses. Two hand weeding reduced the density of sedges up to 72 whereas application of Bensulfuron methyl (Londax) was up to 85 effective. Compared to check, two hand weedings at two stages and chemical control of these weeds increased rice yield 80 and 100 respectively.
