Suspended matter concentrations and both particulate trace metals and delta13 carbon contents were measured in surface waters of an area running from the North Sea to the Celtic Sea. A rough gradient in SPM concentrations is observed from the southwest to the northeast. Trace metal distributions appear to be mainly influenced either by terrigenous inputs (Ti, Al), or by industrial activities (Cu, Zn, Pb), or else by scavenging processes (Cr, Cd). Carbon stable isotope ratios of POC are maximum in the mid Channel, and progressively decrease towards both ends of the studied area with the relative increase of the planktonic fraction in SPM.
