The diameter of placentomas from 39 ewes was estimated at three of four days interval, from day 30 to 102 of gestation, using real-time ultrasound. Measurements were done when the ecographic, transabdominal image of the placentomas showed an external ecogenic ring and a central anecogenic concavity. Placentoma diameter was obtained by averaging the size (cm) of 1-7 placentomas observed per ewe per pregnancy date. The results were calculated for ewes having the same parity and number of fetuses within a range of three days of gestation. The maximum diameter of the placentomas was obtained around days 67 to 90 of gestation. Later, diameter slowly decreased. These changes are independent of the number of fetuses. Comparison of the placentoma sizes amongst ewes with the same parity and single or double pregnancy, suggest that the average diameter is larger in twin gestations. Clinically, the differences are meaningless, indicating that the diameter of the placentomas is not a convenient parameter for litter size diagnosis, but it can be applied to study factors that affect placental development and its effect on birth weight of the lamb.
