Changes in the metabolism of phenolic compounds were studied in cells of the camel's thorn Alhagi Kirghisorum infested with the fungal elicitor Helminthosporium sativum. The treatment of cell with the elicitor stimulated the accumulation of soluble phenolic compounds and caused a 10-fold increase of phenylalanine ammonia-lyase activity and a 2-fold increase of peroxidase activity. The addition to the culture medium of 14C-phenylalanine increased the content of soluble phenolic compounds three times. The label was found not only in the compounds present in intact cells, but also in newly formed ones. The phenolic compounds induced by the elicitor seem to be isoflavonoids.
