Results of ten years of experimentation in biological control against European Red Spider Mite Panonychus ulmi (Koch) in a commercial apple and peach orchard in Switzerland are presented. The method applied was very successful over the ten year period and the conditions for its success are discussed. The use of predatory mites did not allow all acaricide treatment to be abandoned. Chemical control was necessary to correct certain unbalanced situations. Nevertheless, the mean number of acaricides per plot has decreased from about 1.5 per season (1978 to 1984) to 0.2 (1989 to 1995). In addition to the adaptation of the treatment schemes, inoculative releases of predators and natural recolonisation of the orchards were the key for this success.
