By introduction of a site-stable gardening method in the midmontane region of Papua New Guinea a contribution is made to both, the improvement of the subsistence agriculture and the conservation of valuable primary forest. By means of villageoriented appropriate methods and by using locally available materials only, a training programme could be established for subsistence farmers, agricultural offers, youth and women groups. These activities contribute subtantially to prevent the further employment of the "slash and burn" system of shifting cultivation and replaces these methods by a system based on compost use and contour ridge terracing.
