The levels of nonesterified fatty acids, total lipids and cholesterol in the serum of swine: the influence of age, diet, and body weight.

Martincic T. | Svetina A. | Fulgosi E.
The quantity of nonesterified fatty acids (NEFA) and total lipids, and the cholesterol concentration in pig blood serum, were determined. One-year-old, fattened swines had the highest level of serum NEFA, while meat swines had the lowest. The serum of fattened swines had the highest level of total lipids, while the serum of two-year-old sows had the lowest. The mean cholesterol concentration was the highest in young swines and the lowest in meat swines. There is a positive correlation between the level of total lipids and the cholesterol level in the serum of the tested group of swines. A carbohydrate rich diet has a greater effect on the lipid concentration in the serum than the age or body weight.
