The fecundity and longevity of the phytoseiid mite Euseius scutalis (A. H.) were studied using new techniques and different kinds of pollen and other plant derived materials. It was proved that this phytoseiid could be mass reared in large numbers in the laboratory on pollen only. Castor bean pollen had a high nutritional value followed by corn. In addition to pollen grains and nectar, mites were observed feeding on the plant sap from different parts of the leaf, especially the main veins. High numbers of predators reared in a confined place become obviously cannibalistic. Removing the egg masses daily from the culture saved many of the immatures. Adding immatures of the phytophagous mite Tetranychus cinabarinus Boisd to the culture decreased the tendency of the cannibalistic behaviour Differences in results from previous studies were attributed to the advantages of the new techniques used here.
