Interspecific hybridization performed during a 10 year period of time led to the achievement of a large number of hybrid plants, especially with the annual species. The hybrids obtained with perennial species were sterile and that is why only a smaller number of plants could be maintained by backcrossing with the cultivated forms of sunflower. These plants are used in the breeding programme as initial material. Hybrid H. agrophyllus X H. annuus presents some characters from the wild species which provides a resistance to draught and heat. The hybrids with the species H. petiolaris, H. praecex, H. debilis, H. annuus represent an important source for increasing the genetic variability of sunflower as regards some traits: the bulging form of calathidium, vegetation period, cytoplasmatic male sterility and resistance to the attack of some parasites. The hybrids obtained with the species H. rigidus are still being bred. The hybrids with the species H. tuberosus have been totally sterile and could not be maintaied by crossing with the cultivated sunflower forms.
