Field trials of corn production in paddy fields.
1992

A series of field experiments was conducted at Pangasinan and College, Laguna [Philippines] to come up with the technology for production in vast rice paddies of Central Luzon which are idle during dry season due to lack or insufficiency of irrigation water. In the three sites of testing, increasing grain yield response was recorded with increasing fertilization i.e. from 0-0-0 NPK to 194-56-56. Not much significant difference was noted between the two planting populations i.e. 75 x 25 and 75 x 20 cm. The effectiveness of Trichogramma was not demonstrated also in the College experiment. As to the variety, the hybrid P3228 consistently out performed all the open-pollinated varieties tested. Apparently, as far as the sites investigated in this study was concerned, the more important factors for increased in corn production in paddy field are fertilizer rate and variety. Highest profit from corn farming in rice paddy at Sta. Maria and Mestizo, San Carlos City was obtained from use of P3228 at fertilization rate of 6 bags of 14-14-14 and 4 bags of 46-0-0. Corn farming in rice paddy was found to be a losing proposition at College, Laguna.
