Reintroduzione della starna in alcuni ambienti tipici della Toscana [Italia].

This experimental study tries to deepen the present knowledge of the main factors, which influence the repopulating of the gray partridge and the behaviour of such populations. To this purpose, for suitable zones representing different agricultural situations have been chosen in Tuscany. For two years in succession five parties of grau partridges have been set (free) in each zones., throught the system of the brooding in loco (semi-natural brooding), while only observations on the different colonies have been taken during the third uear of the research. As far as the success of the brooding and the surrival of the suck-lings is concerned, the most favourable environment conditions seem to be a cool and damp spring, together with a wide diffusion of pasture with domestic animals: especially cattle. The population on the different zones showed every year, during the research, two basic ethological tendencies: the first one includes most individuals belonging to different groups, which in october-novem ber gathered in large flights in order to leave their birthplace; the second includes a veru small number of individual for each group, which remained in the area, where the hacth took place, to nest in the neighbourhood. In any case, the tendency to form couples of gray partridges coming from different group s seems to prevail.
