A centrifuge decorticator was used to decorticate cashew nuts. When raw nuts were fried in an oil bath at 300 C and the centrifuge wall was lined with gunny sack, at the optimum condition of 680 RPM shaft speed and 50 seconds frying time, the yield of whole kernels was 72.6%. Gunny sack, however, was not a suitable lining material due to its fast deterioration. Rubber sheet was also found to be unsuitable lining material since it yielded not higher than 52.9% whole kernels. When the centrifuge wall was simply made of steel with no lining, at the optimum condition of 430 RPM shaft speed and 50 seconds frying time, the yield was 67.1% whole kernels. The whole kernels yield appeared low, however, it seemed possible that better lining materials could be found which would lead to higher yield. The cashew nut decorticator needed further development.
