Effects of different stages of stalk maturity and the location of eyebuds in the corm on seeding emergence and growth of abaca.
1993
Moreno L.O.
Shoot emergence of abaca seed pieces either directly planted in the field or previously grown in nursery was significantly affected by stalk maturity and location of eyebuds in the corm. Shoot emergence was highest in seed pieces taken from the distal portion of the corm from immature stalks. Sucker production, base circumference and number of functional leaves were highest in plants (directly planted in the field) grown from seedpieces taken from the distal portion of the corm regardless of stalk maturity. However, for nursery grown plants, vegetative growth was significantly affected by stalk maturity and eyebud position during its first six months of growth. Generally, plants taken from the distal portion of the corm regardless of stalk maturity matured earlier than those taken from the proximal portion.
