Field symptoms, spread, and signs of the banded leaf and sheath blight disease on corn [Zea mays] hybrids in Mindanao (Philippines).

Data obtained indicated that visible symptoms were observed 25-30 days after planting (mid whorl). The lower most leaf sheaths first show disease manifestation by the presence of irregular brownish blotches with reddish brown margins. These lesions increase in size and contaminate the upper leaf sheaths eventually killing the blades. The mycelia radiate and spread upward to the blades and cause banding corresponding to the area invaded within a 24-hr-period. The invaded portion first show water soaked appearance later becoming dirty white and appear as bands with length ranging from 1.30 to 1.85 inches across the leaf sheaths and leaf blades wherever initial infection occurred. Mycelia tend to condense and form sclerotial bodies on the outer part of the dried leaf sheaths and blades infected by the pathogens. These sclerotia are first white later become brown with varying sizes from 1.4 mm to 2.7 mm.
