Der biologische Pflanzenschutz in der Praxis - Erwartungen und Bedarf aus der Sicht der Landwirtschaft.

To follow the concept of integrated pest control one important aspect is the reduction in the use of chemical pesticides by favouring microbial pesticides instead. Up to now there are only few commercially available preparations with Bacillus thuringiensis which have been cleared in the Federal Republic of Germany. These insecticides, however, are not allowed to be used in water catchment areas and thus do not materialize the expectations of farmers. Consequently, they do not sell well. Nevertheless, there is still a great demand for microbial pesticides, e. g. in glasshouses (in addition to mass release of beneficial arthropods), in fruit-growing, vegetable cultivation, allotments or for aerial application. But prerequisites to fulfil this demand in practice are as follows: selectivity, sufficient and reliable efficacy, no or minor impact on ecosystems and man, no or short pre-harvest intervals, no restrictions for water catchment areas, application techniques and machinery as well as costs similar to those of chemical pesticides.
