The effects of mepiquat chloride on chemical changes, growth and yield of mungbean variety Utong 1 were investigated. A preliminary experiment was undertaken to obtain optimum concentrations and time of spraying. The result showed that stem height was increased by mepiquat chloride treated at 4 weeks old. The concentrations used in this study were 50, 100 and 200 ppm. Further experiments were conducted by using time and rate as previously mentioned, and found no effect on root growth but all concentrations treated caused an increase in chlorophyll content of mungbean leaves. At 5 and 6 weeks old, the total non structural carbohydrate (TNC) declined as the result of 50 and 100 ppm application thus the TNC/TN ratio was high. In comparison with the untreated plants TNC content was low but TN content was high, so TNC/TN ratio was lower than the treated one. However, the studies at 7 weeks old showed that TNC and TN content and the comparison of the ratios in the treated and untreated plants was not significantly different. The field trial was conducted and showed that mepiquant chloride did not enhance mungbean yield variety Utong 1, although, a number of pods per plant was increased but a number of seeds per pod, 100-seed weight and harvest index value were unchanged as compared to that of the untreated plant. However, a trend in increasing seed yield was evident in those treated with mepiquat chloride at 50 and 100 ppm.
