Effect of plant density, Rhizobium inoculation and nitrogen rates on Faba bean (Vicia Faba, l. )[Egypt].

The present investigation was carried out during 1985/86 and 1986/87 seasons to study the effect of two plant densities (17 amd 33 plants/m), four N rates (0, 36,60 and 84 kg/ha) and rhizobum inoculation on faba bean "Giza 3" cultivar. Plant height and yields of seed and straw/ha significantly increased with dense planting however, seed yield components were reduced. Planting with Rhizobium inoculated seeds significantly increased seed and straw yield. Seed and straw yields increased with increasing N rates up to 60 kg N/ha. Seed and straw yields differences due to the application of 60 and 84 kg N/ha were insignificant. Interactions involving plant density, Rhizobium inoculation and N rates were significant, seed yield/ha was higher with planting 33 plants/m when the seeds were inoculated over all N rates. Regardless of seed inoculation, higher seed yield/ha resulted from the treatments having 36 or 60 kg N/ha and 33 plants/m2. With regard to the interaction between the inoculation and N rates, the highest seed yield/ha resulted from fertilizing faba bean with 60 kg N/ha coupled with seed inoculation with Rhizobium leguminosarum, L.
