Efficacy of deltamethrin for the control of rice green leafhoppers and in the prevention of tungro virus.

There are insecticides effective for the control of green leafhopper (GLH) but because of the nature of the virus-vector relationship they are not able to effectively prevent infection of tungro virus. Deltamethrin and deltamethrin + buprofezin were effective both for control of GlH and with correct timing of application, the limitation of tungro virus. Deltamethrin at 6.25 g/ha alone or in combination with buprofezin at 50 g/ha gave rapid control of GLH at 1 day after application compared to monocrotophos or BPMC which took 3-6 days to reduce the population compared to untreated plots. In Iloilo, Philippines, deltamethrin + buprofezin at 6.25 + 100 g/ha effectively controlled GLH and reduced the level of tungro virus to 17% compared to 50% on untreated plots. This resulted in a yield increase of 1.2 tons per hectare. Trials in Sulawesi, Indonesia have also demonstrated the efficacy of deltamethrin to reduce the incidence of tungro virus. These and other results are discussed in light of the action of deltamethrin and its probable effect on interrupting the transmission of the virus.
