Various gas exchange measuring systems commercially available now are well engineered and optimized for the more frequently studied plant species and for all routine measurements. Despite recent advances, especially in electronics and computer science, these measurements are still difficult under field conditions and for low photosynthetic and transpiration rates. The authors built a complete and robuste field gas exchange measurement system to meet number of scientific aims in tree ecophysiology. Different gas exchange measurements rely on biological principles which govern hypotheses defining the application conditions and can validate calculations to be used. A synthesis of these biophysical principles by use of an integrated system has been made. The governing hypotheses may be implicit in the calculations, there may be multiple hypotheses and these may be widely dispersed in different published works. The goal of this publication however, is not only to provide a synthesis of various articles, but also to be of use in the construction of gas exchange measuring equipment. This will not only reduce the financial burden, but give access to a system which facilitates and automates the measurement of certain tasks and applications during research and development.
