The degradation and movement of chlorpyrifos (Lorsban), 0,0-diethyl-0-(3,5,6-trichloro-2-pyridyl) phosphorothioate, in paddy soil columns under saturated conditions was studied in the laboratory by using miscible displacement study. The breakthrough curve of chlorpyrifos is in sharp contrast from that of C1 which is usually considered as normal curve. The C/Co ratios of chlorpyrifos is the effluent increased initially (but never reaching 1) and then decreased as pore volume increased. Half-life of chlorpyrifos in the influent was 11.1 hours. However, in the soil a half-life of 3.5 hours produced better breakthrough curves in predicting chlorpyrifos movement in the soil columns by using predictive equation. This is expected since other processes particularly degradation and adsorption associated with the soil are responsible for the shorter half-life. Adsorption slowed down the concentration of chlorpyrifos in the adsorbed and solution phase.
