Generally low yield of peanut (Arachis hypogaea L.) is due to small pods and poor roots. An experiment was conducted at Citayam experimental farm with the objectives to clarify root development, growth and yield of peanut as affected by soil conditioner, tillage and mulch application on latosol soil. The experiment was conducted during 1988/89 wet season, using a split plot design with three replications. The main plot treatments were three levels of soil management and the sub plot treatments were four depth of soil tillage. Mulch application and deeper soil tillage increased length and dry weight of roots, leaf area index, filled pod number, 1,000-seed weight and yield, while plant height, leaf chlorophyll content, net assimilation rate and crop growth rate was not affected. The effects of application of soil conditioner and deeper soil tillage was greater, and their effects on dry pods yield of peanut was linear. The highest yield (2,095 t/ha) was obtained at 40 cm depth of soil tillage. Grain yield was significantly correlated with the length and dry weight of roots, leaf area index, number of filled pods per plant and 1,000-seed weight.
