Enhancing efficiencies of biocontrol agents by use of biotechnology.

The tools of biotechnology may be used to improve performance of biocontrol agents. However, major advances are still needed before the full benefits of this approach can be seen. Focusing on the control of soilborne fungal pathogens, issues and approaches for efficiency enhancement are discussed. Enhancement in two general properties will be approached through the isolation of genetic resources that control useful phenotypes: rhizosphere competence/stress tolerance, and elaboration of antifungal substances. For rhizosphere competence and stress survival, appropriate assays and strategies are needed to enable gene isolation. For antibiotic biosynthesis, genes have been cloned in a limited number of systems. In one example, that of Pseudomonas fluorescens strain Hv37a, genes for biosynthesis of the relevant antibiotic, oomycin A, have been cloned and the regulation of antibiotic biosynthesis has been altered.
