Trichinella infected muscles of a wild boar (Sus scrofa), killed by hunters in Northern Italy (Imperia province, Liguria region), were frozen at -20 degree C for 1-4 weeks of freezing interrupted by a thawing and a freezing, and after 3 weeks of freezing. ML, frozen for 4 weeks, did not result viable. The parasite was identified as Trichinella britovi, through allozyme analysis. Three other T. britovi isolates were obtained from foxes (Vulpes vulpes) killed in the same area of the wild boar. The practice of freezing the wild boar meat can no longer be considered a method for rendering Trichinella infected meat safe. T. britovi is confirmed as the only one autochthonous Trichinella species in Italy.
