Application of potassium permanganate at 2.0 ppm over 15-minute potassium permanganate demand (PPD) in fish pond with high density of phytoplankton did not cause significant reduction in the total number of phytoplankton. However, potassium permanganate at 4.0 and 8.0 ppm over 15-minute PPD produced significant reduction in the number of certain species of phytoplankton and reduced the amount of dissolved oxygen. Other water quality parameters during the 72-hour period was slightly changed. Potassium permanganate demand increased with time and concentrations of potassium permanganate. Potassium permanganate disappeared within 60 minutes. The present study indicated that potassium permanganate was not suitable for diseases treatment in the pond with high density of phytoplankton.
