The main pathway of herbicide atrazine (2-chloro-4-ethylamino-6--isopropylamino-s-triazine) in turkey tissues is hydroxylation in the position 2 and N-dealkylation in the position 4 of s-triazine ring. By using gas-chromatography and mass-spectrometry methods, hydroxyatrazine was identified in the turkey liver (0,88 ppm) and in the Kidney (2,70 ppm), while hydroxy-deethylatrazine was identified only in the Kidney (0.27 ppm). Hydroxy-metabolites of atrazine are soluble than chloro-metabolites, so they can be eliminated faster from the tissues by the formation of the conjugates with gluthathione or glucuronic acid. Atrazine residue which has been detected in the turkey leg muscle, request more serious checking of the toxic substances present in feed and water for avians.
