Irrigation: surface or overhead.
1992
Makadho J.
The paper discusses the choice of irrigation, and reviews in a systematic manner the necessary and sufficient conditions which suit each type of irrigation so that the final choice can be made on the basis of sound criteria. The factors to be considered are grouped under the following heading: water supply, topography, climate, soils, crops, economics, and the human element. The paper purports that the choice of irrigation is depended upon a number of limiting conditions which preclude one or another of the possibilities and leave no alternative. In cases where both surface and overhead are possible in theory the choice must be based on the weighing of several factors of which the economic is often, but not always, the determinant. Every modern irrigation method has both advantages and disadvantages and certainly has a definite place in an irrigation system. The irrigation engineer must evaluate the project and choose the method best suitable to local conditions.
