Proceeding from the pedocentric viewpoint the planning of sustainable land use (SLU) takes into account the properties of soil cover and especially its production capability, suitability for agricultural management, probable limitations from the aspect of protecting enviromental quality and possibilities for nonagricultural use. SLU is the management of soil cover in the way, which protects its potential phytoproductivity on a level characteristic of soil taxon, conserves its edaphon activity from natural as well as from agroecosystems. Management intensity of soil cover and leaving its in natural condition must be in concordance with other landscape components (water bodies, roads, buildings, wildlife etc.). The preconditions for ecologically sound use of soil cover are: - easily available and continually updated databases on stable parameters of soils; - presence of soil (conservation) service for monitoring changeable (dynamic) soil characteristics; - know-how on soils distribution (soil maps) and suitability.
