D. sanguinalis (L.) Scop. is known as a dangerous annual, monocotyledonous weed occurring in massive proportions. It is capable of surviving a high degree of water loss without damage. Due to its allelopathy and allelochemical content, studies were made on its suitability as a cover plant for vine rows and interrows. The examinations covered changes in the water deficit during the vegetation period, the development of sublethal saturation deficit and the survival period of the weed. The results showed that D. sanguinalis (L.) Scop has a labile water management, but even on the hotest, driest days the value of the actual water deficit does not reach the sublethal saturation deficit value. Due to its great ecological potential the plant is suitable for the covering of the strips between vine rows without damage to the vines. Its effect on the water management of the vines is currently the subject of investigation.
