Effect of shading on anatomical characteristics of sweet pepper (Capsicum annuum L.) was studied in pot experiments. Plants were cultivated in 40, 55 and 63% shading and compared with check plants grown under full sunny conditions. Sunny leaves were found to be thicker than shaded leaves. This apppeared to be related to both larger number and greater size of palisade and spongy cells. In addition, the palisade layer of sunny leaves was more clearly differentiated than the shaded leaves. Shaded leaves tended to have more intercellular spaces than sunny leaves.
