Quarantine measures prohibiting the cultivation of cucurbits, legumes and solanaceous plants, which act as reproductive hosts for the whitefly Bemisia tabaci were implemented in the agricultural region of Azua. Also, a ban on the cultivation of beans during the fall period (end of August till September); the cultivation of cucurbits and solanaceous crops only in the valley of San Juan de la Maguana, and the implementation of a technological package (DIA-SEA) has resulted in the incidence of BGMV in this region. This is an important step considering that this region produces between 45-50 percent of the national production of red beans. Equally important, the whitefly populations in bean-producing regions have drastically diminished, apparently, due to a break in the intensive monoculture of cucurbit and solanaceous crops previously grown in the Azua plains, and the ban on the cultivation of potatoes and tomatoes in the valley of San Juan de la Maguana. In the northwest, a notable reduction in BGMV incidence and B. tabaci populations in bean-growing regions has also been observed. In this region, the application of the technological package consisting of: early planting dates; elimination of geminivirus-affected weeds, rouging of mosaic-affected bean plants, and the use of pesticides (monocrotophos) two to six weeks after planting, has been considered as the most successful control measure. The implementation of this technological package in the valley of San Juan de la Maguana, has resulted in bean yield increases in the order of 26-59 percent depending on the BGMV incidence.
