Competitive ability of an F1 rice hybrid.
1989
Janiya J.D. | Moody K.
The growth of the hybrid IR21845-90-3A/IR54, its parents, and IR64 varied with cropping season. Plant height, leaf area index (LAI), and spikelet sterility were higher in the wet season than in the dry season, while total tiller number, number of productive tillers, 1000 grain yield were higher in dry season. Plant height, LAI, total tiller number, number of productive tillers, and grain yield of IR64 were reduced by uncontrolled weed growth regardless of cropping season. Plant height, total tiller number, number of productive tillers, grain yield of the hybrid were reduced by uncontrolled weed growth during the wet season but not during the dry season. Yields reductions due to weed competition of IR64, IR54, IR21845-90-3B, and the hybrid were 61, 50, 31, and 35%, respectively, in the dry season. The hybrid was intermediate in its competitiveness against weeds compared to its parents but it was more competitive than IR64.
