Thrips is the most important pest of mungbean in the dry season. The symptoms of attack are curling of the leaves and stunting of the plants and pods are not formed when plants are severely damaged. Control measures, using insecticides, were tested at Jembatan Kembar, Kecamatan Gerung, Kabupaten Lombok Barat, in the dry season, from May to September 1990. Carbofuran 3 G (8 kg/ha) applied at planting and monocrotophos 150 WSC (2 l/ha) applied when thrips were found during the crop growth were effective to decrease thrips populations and to prevent development of symptoms, leading to a yield increase of 82 percent. Insecticide applications at vegetative growth stages or generative growth stages alone, was not sufficiently effective, resulting to yield losses of about 32 percent. The best treatment to control thrips was application of carbofuran 3 G at planting followed by application of monocrotophos 150 WSC based on the development of leafcurl symptoms and thrips populations. By using this supervised control, the amount of pesticides can be reduced by 50 percent, compared with a full protection based on calendar system.
