A single annual treatment with doses ranging from 100 to 1.2 o/o of the recommended rate of Bayleton 25 WP was carried out between the end of tilling and the beginning of shooting in 5 m2 plots. The degree of plant infection with powder mildew was expressed using the average coefficient of infection (ACI), which takes into consideration both the extent to which the leaf area is covered and the plant response. A single, early spraying with 11.1 o/o of the recommended dose led to a substantial reduction in the epidemic. In moderately susceptible and suspectible varieties, yield increases were observed even at lower rates if these were applied very early on a single occasion. If treatment can be carried out before the appearance of the symptoms, it is unnecessary to increase the number of applications, since several treatments do not give a yield surplus that would cover the costs of the extra treatments.
