Sustainable corn production in the Philippines
2011
Gonzales, L.A.
There are four major development challenges faced by Philippine crop agriculture: producing more with less land and water, ensuring the sustainability of agriculture by arresting soil erosion, developing the supply chains for agricultural products to make food more affordable and to raise the income of producers, and maintaining the competitiveness of Philippine agricultural products in the global market (Javier, 2009). The paper reviewed the introduction of new technologies in the corn subsector, such as improved downy mildew resistance OPV [open pollinated varieties], hybridized corn seeds and genetically modified (GM) yellow corn, and used trend analysis and the production function approach to determine their structural relationship with resource use and contribution to productivity and sustainability. A review of secondary data collected and compiled by BAS [Bureau of Agricultural Statistics, Philippines] revealed that these data sets are inadequate to develop intensive sustainability indices for corn production in the country.
