This paper describes the prospects of two mechanisms agreed internationally to reduce the impact of climate change, as alternative financing strategies in the integrated ecosystem management of Laguna Lake Region. The two mechanisms are Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) and Reducing Emissions due to Deforestation and Forest Degradation (REDD+). History, background, processes in undertaking the mechanisms and issues related to their implementation were described to illustrate that given the circumstances in Laguna Lake Region and issues that hound the mechanisms UPLB can participate int he projects and be actively involved in helping in the processes to make the mechanisms work positively for the Philippines. Considering its capabilities relative to the issues discussed, especially those pertaining in the technical difficulties of undertaking the requirements of the mechanisms, UPLB can be both a project implementer and a service provided to project proponents. The prospects for UPLB were enumerated including the benefits including among others the generation of funds that may be generated to support other IEM projects. The prospects include institution of new courses and programs, conducting researches relevant to the efficient undertaking of the requirements of the mechanisms, formulate them and ensure equitable benefits, providing technical assistance to proponents, developing model areas to pilot CDM and REDD+ projects which can be used to capacitate other sectors and proponents interested in similar projects and creating institutions relevant to CDM and REDD+ requirements for third party assessment and verification.
