A field experiment was conducted from May to October 2007 at the Central Experiment Station of the University of the Philippines Los Baños, to examine the morphological and agronomic responses of their rice varieties to different spacing and seedling age. The split-split plot design with three replications was used with three varieties(PSB Rc72H, PSB Rc 18, and Dinorado), three seedling ages(8, 15, and 20-day old seedling), and two spacings (20cm x 20cm and 40cm x 40cm). PSB Rc 72H produced longest panicle and highest number of leaves on the main culm. PSB Rc 18, produced the highest numbers of tiller and productive tillers per hill, longest days to maturity, and highest numbers of panicles per hill. Dinorado had the lowest values in all parameters measured. Plant height and days to maturity were significantly increased with 20-day old seedlings. The shorter phyllochron, higher root pulling resistance and number of leaves on the main culm were observed for 8-day old seedlings. Most of these characters increased significantly at wider spacing. Significant responses on grain yield were observed only at closer spacing. There was no significant difference on root aerenchyma cell numbers, size, and total aerenchyma cell area due to variety, seedling age, spacing and their interactions.
