Further investigation of pineapple (Ananas comosus) leaves for the control of gastrointestinal nematodes of sheep

Inspired by results of previous studies that leaves of pineapple, which is widely grown plant in the country, could be an alternative and cheap dewormer for sheep, a follow up study was done to verify its potential. Two consecutive trials were performed. The first trial using 40 naturally infected sheep 3 months old and above aimed to determine the effect of air-dried pineapple leaves (PL) administration following single dose of 200 mg/kg body weight (BW) and 400 mg/kg BW, and two doses of 200 mg/kg BW on gastrointestinal (GI) nematode fecal egg counts (FEC) of sheep.The second one compared the effect of single dose of 400 mg air-dried PL/kg BW and 2 g fresh PL/kg BW on GI FEC of sheep using 30 sheep. However, the evidence gathered in the present study indicates that its efficacy against gastrointestinal (GI) nematodes of sheep is low and variable even at higher doses. We were not able to obtain a high fecal egg count reduction percentage (FECR %) that is comparable to the result of our previous study also in sheep and following basically the same methodology. A low efficacy was also obtained in a follow up study using the highest dose of air-dried PL and its equivalent dose of fresh PL.
