One hundred fifty one hybrid parent lines consisting of 118 restorer and 33 maintainer lines were evaluated for percent chalkiness using digital image processing and analyzed with Machine Vision System (MVS) software developed by Philippine Center for Postharvest Development and Mechanization (PhilMech) during 2010 dry and wet seasons. Analysis revealed twelve chalkiness classifications. In addition, results showed that the number of parent lines that are considered chalky is fewer in the dry season than in the wet season. However, some lines with consistent chalkiness classification in both seasons were observed. The identification of parent lines with premium grains based on chalkiness will facilitate the development of quality rice hybrids. In addition, the utilization of digital image processing provides faster and more objective measurement of chalkiness than visual classification.
