Comparative efficacy of intramedullary pinning with full cerclage wires and screwing for the repair of mid shaft tibial fracture in dogs

The present study was designed to evaluate the comparative efficacy of two different established techniques of internal implants such as intramedullary pinning with multiple full cerclage wires and cortical screws alone for the repair of tibial fracture in dogs. The study was carried out on sixteen mongrel dogs, having age ranges from two to six year, which were brought to pet centre of the university during last year for treatment of tibia] fracture. Dogs were divided into two groups, Group A and group B each having eight animals. In group A fracture site was reduced and immobilized with cortical screws alone after taking lag effect, while in group B, intramedullary pins with multiple full cerclage wires were used for rigid immobilization of the fracture segments. The dogs were kept for a period of sixty days and efficacy of both techniques was judged on the basis of physical examination and radiographic evaluation. The results of the study clearly revealed that the intramedullary pinning with multiple full cerclage wires was the better technique for the repair of tibial fracture in dogs as compare with screwing alone.
