Parasitic infections in large and small ruminants in Serbia in the last two decades

Sheep and cattle production depend crucially on animal health, which may seriously deteriorate owing to the parasitism of certain endo- and ectoparasite species. Combat against the majority of parasites in large and small ruminants is aimed at lessening the parasite burden, thus suppressing their negative effects on the productive characteristics of the hosts. Learning the epidemiological patterns of parasitic diseases in a region facilitates greatly the adequate choice and application of corresponding preventive measures. In the current work the data on the prevalence of certain parasitic infections in large and small ruminants in Serbia in the period from 1990 to 2010 are presented. The data resulted, firstly, from the laboratory research performed at the Department of Parasitic Diseases (Belgrade University, Faculty of Veterinary Medicine), and, secondly, from other field studies. There were 5642 faecal samples and skin scrapings of 1603 animals examined at the Department. The animals originated from subsistence and commercial farming, all being allowed to graze on pastures. Coprological investigations revealed infections of cattle, sheep and goats with coccidia, trichostrongylids, lungworms, trematodes, cestodes and trichurid nematods. In addition, psoroptic mange was diagnosed by means of dermatological diagnostic procedures. The remaining data give insight into the epidemiology of parasitic infections of considerable economic importance in small and large ruminants in Serbia: sarcocystosis, cryptosporidiosis, anaplasmosis, hydatidosis, cysticercosis, fasciolosis and infestation with sucking lice. The results presented, as a whole, are aimed at the completion of epidemiological patterns of parasitic infection in ruminants in Serbia throughout the last two decades thus enabling the maintenance of adequate measures in the combat against existing diseases/infections in cattle, sheep and goats.
