Giardia duodenalis is an intestinal protozoan parasite that infects a wide range of host species, including human causing Giardiosis, a common cause of diarrhea in almost all vertebrates (Xiao, 1994; Oslon et al., 1997). Dairy calves can excrete high number of cyst of G. duodenalis and the disease in cattle is clinically important because can reduce the growth performance of the ruminants (Olson et al., 1995; Ralston et al., 2003). Molecular characterization of these parasites has demonstrated that a number of genotypes and species are common to both humans and animals, and that zoonotic transmission may occur. Our survey, carried out in dairy cattle farms of Sardinia (Italy) has the aim to investigate the diffusion and the potential risk for transmission of Giardiosis between cattle and humans. Infection with G. duodenalis detected in dairy herds in Sardinia at the time would not seem to be an important health problem for cattle and humans due to the epidemiological parameters found.
