Veterinary clinical laboratories are not subjected to the legislative and the licensing requirement that apply to human clinical laboratories, although the requirement for quality results is similar. Significant attention has to be directed towards the pre-analytical components of laboratory testing. Highly sophisticated testing technology cannot produce a reliable result from a poor quality specimen. Therefore, the correct collection, handling and processing of specimens are of utmost importance. During pre-analytical phase several errors can occur, such as inaccurate identification of specimens, incorrect use of additive tubes, incorrect timing of blood and urine collection, insufficient sample volume, specimen haemolysis, etc. Recommended procedures for the collection, handling and processing of blood and urine specimens are intended to prevent errors during pre-analytical phase and thus misinterpretation of laboratory results.
