In this study, results of the boars semen quality control by means of CASA (Computer Assisted Sperm Analysis), flow cytometry (PC) and cytomorphological examination were compared to reproductive parameters in sows (farrowing rate, number of piglets per litter, ratio of live and dead born piglets). We noticed marked seasonal variations of the semen quality, especially during summer with a strong negative impact on the farrowing rate. The first signs of deterioration observed by cyto-morphological examination predicted later changes in motility and fertility. Percentage of farrowing was not affected, probably due to the high number of sperm cells in the dose, but motility had a noticeable influence. Sperm chromatin structure assay should be expandeed to the larger number of animals for more consistent results and conclusions. Specific changes in sperm morphology contributed to the success of insemination, but the number of piglets per litter was not in correlation with the analyzed parameters. Extensive contamination by saprophytic bacteria indicated needs for changes in the technology of boars semen collection and preparation. Systematic analyses of semen conducted by several methods, along with the periodic bacteriological control, potentiate the possibility for reliable estimation of boars semen quality.
