Neospora caninum is a protozoal microorganism that was firstly discovered in dogs in 1984, and its ability to cause abortions in cows was proved in 1989. The species is worldwide distributed in dairy and beef cattle, and the percentage of sero-positive findings ranges from 5 to 65%. This parasite was recently considered as a significant cause of reproductive problems and abortions in cows. N. caninum hosts are dogs and other carnivores, spreading infection via oocysts excreted in faeces to the external environment. Cattle become infected by ingesting oocysts in food and water. Causative agent is transmitted through placenta to the fetus and the consequences of infections might be different depending on the pregnancy phase. Abortions usually occur between 3rd – 7th months of pregnancy. In certain areas it was documented that N. caninum is responsible for more than 30% of all abortions in cows. Laboratory diagnosis is performed by IHC staining, IFAT, Western blot method (WB) and PCR. In order to detect specific antibodies, following techniques are used: direct agglutination (DA), ELISA and cELISA. In the Vojvodina region (Serbia), first test were carried out 7 years ago from serum samples originating from cows located at 3 farms. The samples were randomly selected and in order to demonstrate presence of antibodies specific for N. caninum. During last two years, in order to determine the cause of abortion, we have examined 132 sera samples from cows that had a miscarriage. We were able to demonstrate antibodies specific for N. caninum in five animals (3.7%).
