Repellents are substances which draw away harmful arthropods from source of food. Their appearance was not recently discovered. Since 1901, when was proved repellent activity of citronella against lice and fleas, up to this day have been investigating substances with this characteristics, mechanism of activity, consequence on environment and resistance. In this article we want to show beginning, development and importance application of repellents in protection of humans from vector-born diseases (spotted typhus, malaria, denga, yellow fever, West-Nile, Lyme disease), their presence in the world and in our country. In our environment, in spite of attendance vector-born diseases and not a few number of repellents (botanical and synthetical) their use is not sufficient. Without regard of good results of investigations leaded on academic areas, in our country use of repellents is not wide-spread. With purpose of better protection from vectors and successfully interruption circulation of pathogens, education of citizens by public mass media is necessary.
