During the years 2004 and 2005, the effect of selected soil sorbents on Cd cumulation in edible parts of carrot was followed. Organic humus fertilizer Humavit, and absorbent of mineral origin zeolit, were used as absorbens. The content of Cd in carrot roots indicated that the increase of its content in soil results in a non-linear cumulation in carrots. The observation of the potential ability of the absorbents on the cadmium cumulation decrease showed that application of organic humus fertilizer Humavit significantly decreases Cd content in carrot roots (approximately 25% to 35%) due to contamination of growing medium (2 and 5 mg Cd per kg in soil), and amount of applied Humavit (5%). Zeolite (5%) as an absorbent of mineral origin was applied in soil which was contamined with 5 mg Cd per kg and significantly decreased the content of cadmium in carrot roots (about 28%). Lower amounts of Humavit and zeolite did not result in statistically significant decrease of Cd content in carrot roots. An intensive and systematic research of specific ion-exchangeable properties of zeolite resources opens wide possibilities for the absorbents use in environmental protection.
