Contribution explains position of landscape maintenance in natural and landscape preservation's development in Slovakia and Czech Republic and expected trends, and we analyse legal interpretation of term and relative ones. Research ofprotected landscape area (PLA) of Biele Karpaty Mountains resulted from requirement of verification of "Method - of characteristic landscape appearance (CHLA) identification". We present results of basic research in PLA, with concentration on CHLA identification, and its characteristic features in connection with requirement of future existence of PLA re-evaluation. Unique signs of region rise from traditional forms of scattered settlement, which developed in specific natural and historical conditions of area. There appear historical landscape structures in CHLA as specific pattems (plate, frond and line types of fields arrangement) in PLA. We identify axiological attributes and we interpret them as significant landscape components-signs, which have considerable spatial abundance in studied area. They are used as arguments for future maintenance of this area, with management of special preservation. There appear significant specific land-use forms - historical landscape structures. They require better maintenance as in present, because they support diversity of land-cover structures and indirectly they contribute to biodiversity.
